QLD We Care Day – Sunday 23 August
The final day of Queensland Seniors Week 2020 is reserved as We Care Day to show our support and gratitude for those who have stepped up to the plate to support one another during the COVID-19 pandemic.
Council on the Ageing (COTA) Queensland’s Chief Executive Mark Tucker-Evans said during the height of lockdowns the Queensland Government had prioritised efforts to support older people to ensure they had access to food, medication and connections with their communities.
“For the seniors who did need help, the Care Army has been there to give them a helping hand. 28,500 people had signed up to the Care Army with 5,000 older Queenslanders requesting support. This shows that people are willing to roll up their sleeves in a time of need and that our older community members are more resilient than we first thought.” Mark said.
“This year we’ve been celebrating Queensland Seniors Week a little differently with a mixture of online and some physical events. We know some of the usual interactive program have not been possible but Queensland Seniors Week 2020 has provided an opportunity for people to access a wide range of events and activities that they may not have previously been able to.”
“We can’t wait for our communities to come together in person once more and show Queensland seniors just how far our love and appreciation for them extends.”
“Older people make an enormous contribution to our communities through volunteering and providing informal care. During the lockdown Queenslanders stepped up to the plate to assist and it has taken an army of people to fill those vital roles.
This Sunday Queenslanders are encouraged to share their thanks for their fellow Queenslanders who have assisted and supported one another by sharing a Virtual Hug and stories of resilience through the Together: the stories of us campaign.
A number of landmarks in Brisbane and Townville will be red and white in support of We Care Day.
