Queensland Seniors Month – Apply for a chance to share in $100,000

This year will mark the 60th anniversary of celebrating Queensland’s seniors with the festivities to be held over the entire month of August 2020.

Initiated by Council on the Ageing (COTA) Queensland as Old People’s Week in 1960 when we had old people’s homes rather than Residential Aged Care Facilities, and COTA was known as the Old People’s Welfare Council,  the annual celebration has grown to include almost 1,000 events and activities held across Queensland.

“It’s exciting to be celebrating this milestone but along with the celebrations we will also focus on issues such as ageism, social isolation and loneliness” said COTA Queensland Chief Executive Mark Tucker-Evans

“Whilst the focus of Seniors Month is recognising older Queenslanders issues such as ageism and loneliness can be experienced by people at any age. We will be taking the opportunity to bring together people of all ages to gain a better understanding of the strengths of each.

We are encouraging event organisers to celebrate the diversity of older Queenslanders through inclusive events and activities in their communities.”

Funded by the Queensland Government, applications are open now for community groups and local councils to apply to share in $100,000 to support events and activities.

Applications close Sunday 15 March.
