New guide to support carers

A new guide to help health professionals deliver improved support to those who care for someone with a mental illness has been launched today.

A Practical Guide For Working With Carers of People with a Mental Illness” will support general practitioners, psychologists, mental health nurses and other allied health professionals and service providers as they work with people with mental illness and their carers.

Topics covered in a check-list format range from helping carers to navigate confidentiality arrangements to ensuring they are aware of the support available to them and having ‘carer champions’, who advocate for carer engagement, within workplaces.

The guide has been developed by a consortium of mental health organisations including the Private Mental Health Consumer Carer Network Australia and Mind Australia.

Service providers and health professionals who work with carers will use the guide, which is being rolled out nationally.
