NSW Grandparent of the Year

The NSW Grandparent of the Year has been awarded as part of Grandparents Day; a celebration of the contribution made by grandparents and older Australians to their families and communities.

Minister for Ageing John Ajaka said that Grandparents Day paid tribute to those older Australians who go beyond the traditional grandparent role and make a crucial contribution to their families and communities.

“Today is the day to take a moment to recognise and celebrate the enormous contribution made by the older people in our lives, be it the love and support of your grandparents or the dedication of older community leaders.”

“I congratulate the many grandparents and older Australians in our community who are deserving of recognition for their important contribution,” Mr Ajaka said.

The winners of the NSW Grandparents of the Year Awards are:

  • NSW Grandparent of the Year - Marjorie & Graham Elphick who have volunteered their time at St Marys North Public school for the past 45 years.

  • Recognition Certificate – Carol Underwood is a full time carer to three of her young grand children under the age of 8.

  • Recognition Certificate – Violet Lord who volunteers five days a week at her local primary school, serving breakfast to more than 100 children a day. In addition to this, as a foster parent Violet has fostered more than 100 children over the past 40 years.

  • Recognition Certificate – Ian Gilfeather has worked as a case worker for the Department of Community Services for many years, and has used his experience to protect children from child abuse. Ian now uses his skills as a Mental Health Educator to assist children in the community through schools.

Minister for Aboriginal Affairs Leslie Williams said that grandparents play an important role in Aboriginal communities and several Aboriginal and early childhood community organisations will receive funding through this year’s grants program.
