Leading world experts in dementia come to Sydney

World leading experts in dementia research and care from more than 15 countries will arrive at the 2018 International Dementia Conference in Sydney later this week.

The two-day event hosted by aged care provider, HammondCare and its research centre, the Dementia Centre will host more than 1,000 delegates starting this Thursday. Speakers at the conference will address dementia risk reduction, innovation in care practices, implications of new clinical research, new treatment practices and more.

Director of the Dementia Centre, Associate Professor Colm Cunningham said dementia treatment would become an increasingly important part of Australia’s healthcare system.

“More than 425,000 Australians have dementia and that figure will rise to one million by 2056, so dementia care has to be a priority,” A/Professor Colm Cunningham said.

“Dementia is the second leading cause of death in Australia, so it is important that there is greater awareness on how to reduce the risks and how to best care for your loved one.

“It is a rare opportunity to hear from both researchers and people with dementia side by side to discuss best practice and policy to support people living with dementia.”

75 speakers will present at the conference, eight of whom are people living with dementia. Speakers include:

  • The Hon. Ken Wyatt – the Minister for Aged Care and Minister for Indigenous Health will address the future direction of aged care.
  • Professor Craig Ritchie – from the University of Edinburgh and one of the leading authorities on dementia clinical trials, who will talk about dementia risk reduction in mid-life.
  • Professor Stephen MacFarlane – from the Dementia Centre in Australia, will present on the effectiveness of the Severe Behaviour Response Team (SBRT).

“Topics will range from home design to home care, and dementia care for transgender and gender diverse communities to remote indigenous communities,” A/Prof Colm Cunningham said.

Tickets to the conference have been sold out.
